An Art Community Proposal

I am currently scheduling a traveling exhibit for the years 2011-2013.  This traveling show will be a collaboration of my woven paintings in the An Art Community series and that of the woven free form installation titled Come Undone.

The works will adapt and change to each venue.  The An Art Community works will with the help of the gallery or museum staff be re-named after the communities within each city that they travel, keeping a record of these “sister communities” as they go.  The Come Undone installation will alter in it’s size, shape and format to best suit each location.

If you have a venue that would be interested in participating in the traveling exhibit, please send a request for the project proposal and I will email details regarding the concept, time frame and work that will be in the exhibition.

Meat Market

Meat Market 2010

Images of a meat market were the first thoughts that sprang in my head when viewing the fiber artist Christina Massey. Thankfully the title of the show ‘Meat Market’ meet my expectations. These works are amazingly raw and in your face. I find the crafting of the work very attractive because the art has a beautiful, repulsive, and natural theme. I like this piece because it helps us re-experience objects like hanging meat and re-frames the object into a made art piece. By remaking hanging meat, we start to think about our relationship with meat without feeling the artists is swaying our opinion. On the blog there are some weaved pieces that I think are a little weak, because the material is being used in very expected way in contrast to all those unexpected ways Massey uses in her other work. Dead Painting is much more innovative and interesting because the work engages painting and sculpture in between space. I have always liked Eva Hesse’s work because of her way of reinventing sculpture. Massey is continuing in this tradition of innovation of material and giving the viewer have mixed feelings of attraction or repulsion about the objects.

Business & Pleasure

Recently featured on the blog Art Propelled, the series originally titled “Bits & Pieces” has been renamed to “Business & Pleasure.”  I felt this new title better reflected the ideas and concepts behind the work.  Please visit the site Art Propelled for more on the writer, Robyn Gordon, her work, process and inspirations.
