Come, fill the Cup, and in the Fire of Spring / The Winter Garment of Repentance Fling!

The Rubaiyat, Omar Khayyam, 1120 AD

What comes to your mind when we say Spring? Warm sunshine, sprinkles and showers, nature in bloom – all creatures rejoicing in the reawakening spirit of life, green leaves, colorful flowers, busy birds and bees…and people too. Yes, free spirits everywhere delight in this season.

.

I wanted to have this exhibition for special reasons (says curator Yuko Nii.) The earth’s climate is changing drastically, erasing the distinct seasons we’ve taken for granted for centuries. Nature’s cycles as we know them might not continue– how will future generations understand the paintings and poetry of Primavera, the cultural legacies of Spring? I wanted to see how artists communicate their feelings about the season, before it becomes extinct. I entitled the show Spring Fling to express the flare of radiant, light-hearted spirits in celebration.

.

I also envision Spring Fling as a kind of seedling, launched in preparation for the WAH Center Sweet 16 Anniversary Celebration coming up in October. Like many cultural institutions, we face significant financial challenges, and fundraising is crucial to both maintain our exhibition programs and preserve our historic building. Spring Fling will kick-off a series of fundraising events to help support our important Sweet 16 milestone and keep us going for the future.

.

Spring Fling opens on Saturday, April 21 with a gallery reception, dinner, and night of unique musical performances and dance party! In conjunction with the exhibition, there will be many exciting events, including a two-day Spring Dance Festival, performance programs, walking and bike tours, artist market, food vendors, and more. We look forward to welcoming you all and sharing the joy of the Spring spirit!

Business & Pleasure

A solo exhibition at the Corridor Gallery Project Space

OPENING RECEPTION Sunday, April 15th 4-6pm.

April 13th – May 19th

Business & Pleasure comes to the Corridor Gallery Project Space a solo exhibition of Christina Massey. Massey’s bold compositions are painterly and sculptural creations of recycled work clothes, older paintings, and new visceral paint elements.

In the exhibition Business and Pleasure there is a sense of violence in the deconstruction and a sexualized tenderness holding pieces together as they fold into each other. Bold colors slice and fold through the paintings, off setting these tactile squares.

Massey’s inspiration is driven from “the Economic Recession, Bank Bail Outs and the emotional ups and downs that have followed these events, I literally “destroyed” my past work in order to rebuild it in a new form.” These organic pieces resemble tattered earthy quilts that are reminiscent of the artist’s personal journey, which resonates with the economic ups and downs to which everyone can relate.

Corridor Gallery is open Fridays – Saturdays from 12 to 6pm and by appointment.

For questions about this exhibition contact Corridor Gallery 718-638-0741

This unique show will feature the work of contemporary quilter, Patricia Montgomery, mixed media artist, Christina Massey and installation work by Eun-Kyung-Suh.

Brooklyn native, Christina Massey discusses her “Business and Pleasure” series, “During the winter of 2008-2009 I was laid-off of my job due to the economic Recession. With mixed emotions of hurt and rejection from the loss of the job, I also felt relief from a commitment to a job I didn’t want. Losing my job during that time gave me a place in History, and I felt connected to all the millions of people in the same position as me and sought to create a series of work that focused on these mixed emotions.

Using collared shirts and khaki pants donated from bank employees, I hand stitched together sections of my own past “failed” work that had been torn and cut up with scraps of new canvas. This organic, quilt-like surface is stretched over a frame and painted with acrylic and oil paints.

Physically fragments of new and old, success and failure, business and pleasure these works are bits & pieces of my past and present, likes and dislikes, a merger of corporate requirements and the livelihood of being an Artist.”

Patricia Montgomery from the San Francisco Bay area notes, “Syncopation series are abstract textiles that are characteristic of African American quilts. These characteristics include vivid color palettes, strong contrasting color combinations, asymmetrical and strip piecing. The design and development of this series is based on color, texture and rhythm.

These contemporary African American quilts provide a colorful celebration of the human spirit and community.”

Korean-born, Duluth-based textile installation artist Eun-Kyung Suh, received a M.F.A. from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA in the U.S.A. She has been focusing on a series of sculptural vessels as a metaphor for personal, family and cultural memory since 2008. These sculptural vessels are created out of diaphanous textiles, using a design originally inspired by Bojagi, one of traditional art forms in Korea. Bojagi is the wrapping cloth used to cover, store or carry everything from precious ritual objects to everyday clothes and common household belongings.
